Public Holiday Surcharge
Saturday, May 9, 2009
The 15% public holiday surcharge is another angry topic for customers.
First they think that they should not have to pay it full stop.
Some dispute that the particular day in question is not a pubic holiday and should not pay it. Then others complain as to why they should pay it.
Let me tell you why
The hospitality industry is renown for its low pay, it’s so called award wage (a load of bollocks) It is among the lowest payed work forces out there. So you cheap skates complain about paying a measly 15%, fuck off and don’t come back. You probably wouldn’t have left a tip either, for the luxury of being able to dine out on Christmas, Easter, Anzac or Mayday just to mention a few, while we work for your pleasure. The majority do it without any reward mind you!!!
So next time you dine out on one of these special days pay a little thought to the fortunate situation you are in, unlike the chef, waiter, washer or cleaner that enables you to enjoy.
Restaurant profits
As you probably don't know the profit made in restaurants is not huge. Why do you think they are always changing owners or going broke! It is hard to make money. How can that be I here you ask. Well for a start the wholesale price of food is basically the same as retail. When you go shopping I bet you almost always say 'wow thats gone up' or 'thats expensive' or 'how much did we just spend on groceries', am I right, I bet I am.

Arrr ranting chef once again an awesome post. If I had a dollar for every time I was told “arrr that’s bullshit its not a public holiday…or….I don’t see why I should have to pay a Ser charge that’s crap you guys are just trying to rip us off” I would be able to buy myself a top night out on a public holiday (with sur charge) and pay my rent for a week or two as well lol. It’s a disgrace that accusations such as these are STILL sourly offered up at the end of the fully serviced meal… and it drives me up the fucking wall.
There are pros and cons to working a public holiday for me anyways (casual staff). Obviously the money that staff encure on a public holiday wage is much nicer looking than the pissy award wage that we so gracefully swallow every other fucking week. I think that workers within this industry are so extremely under paid, I almost feel like a complete fuckwit at the end of the fought night when I receive the pay packet and laugh to hold back from completely loosing it. Out of all the scum and shit we put up with on a daily basis that is by far the lowest kick in the guts.
Then come the cons… there will always…. ALWAYS… be at least one person that thinks the establishment in which he just sat and dined in are tying to take him for a ride and milk every last dollar out of him. As if we actually have the time or energy to hatch evil fucking plans to rob them for the sake of doing it…. If I wanted to take his money I would roll the mother fucker in the parking lot. So we simply smile and politely say sorry mate/sir/shit-for-brains, it actually IS a public holiday and the following reasons for the surcharge are as such …….. (refer rantings post)
The sour look at the end of the 2 hr effort I have just put in making YOUR night a pleasant and care free one, has now just been blown. It’s the end of the world as you know it because instead of SHUTING YOUR FUCKING MOUTH and just paying it you would prefer to stand at the register and dispute the cause behind a very understandable, valid and necessary charge…
It shits me
